Name: Tobari
Canon: Tobari of the Dawn
Canon Point: Post battle with Kokonoe.
OU/AU/CRAU/OC: OU
Age: Approximately 90-100 years old.
World Information: Seems to be set in Feudal Japan, with yokai tending to terrorise humans, and monks trying to exorcise them to keep humans safe. Yokai tend to follow the strongest amongst themselves and the leaders of these yokai packs tend to rule over a specific mountain. Of course, Tobari is making it a point to take over every mountain so that the yokai will listen to him and help him make a coexisting, peaceful world with the humans. Tobari is a child of a nine-tailed fox yokai, yet despite being as powerful as he is, he only has two tails (each tail is supposed to be an indicator of strength and power), thus a rumour has gone around that he's actually very weak compared to the truth.
Personal History: Tobari is the child of a nine-tailed fox yokai, Kokonoe, who was also one of the Three Great Demons. He was born with so much spirit energy that his body was literally crumbling to hold onto it. His mother begged for him to live and Magatoki, a powerful demon who is possibly another one of the Three Great Demons said he would give Tobari a stable body on the condition that his soul would then belong to him. Kokonoe agreed and Magatoki placed a cage around Tobari's soul, sealing in a terrified child as it suppressed his spirit energy. Despite Tobari's strength, he only keeps two tails throughout his life, instead of the signifying mark of nine, which spreads the rumour that he is weak.
To create a safe place for Tobari to live, Kokonoe asserted her rule over Akatsuki, wiping out those who lived there. However, Tobari cried against it, grabbing her tails and begging her to stop. He tells her that they've already surrendered and that should be enough. She gives in and allows the rest to live.
Magatoki was often by young Tobari's side, teaching him how to grow flowers. Tobari says that he loves flowers because their beauty is short lived, and that he feels similarly towards humans.
One day, Tobari meets a human girl named Sayuri and she asks to play with him. They quickly become friends. He tells Sayuri that his dream is to make a paradise for humans and yokai to coexist. Sayuri supports his dream, even though it means that Tobari will be gone for a long time to train. She says that they'll play again when he comes back.
One day, when defending their garden from Rikugou, Tobari couldn't control his own power and ended up sinking the garden into the earth in a giant hole. Tobari became terrified of his own power, afraid of destroying everything he loved, and said he would never try to grow anything again, becoming bedridden with grief. Magatoki takes on a little of Tobari's power to help him control it, hoping to restore Tobari to his happy, dreaming self. Tobari tells Sayuri that he's afraid of his own power because he destroyed something beyond repair. Sayuri asks if that means he's scared to play with her now. He says he would never be. She tells him that his power isn't scary and that she loves his power. She tells him that if he's ever scared that he can come play with her until his worries disappear. Then Tobari departs for Botai Cavern to train his abilities.
There, Tobari absorbs all of the imprisoned souls that were trapped by Magatoki of the cavern. Through this, he is able to hold onto them and learn their valuable techniques. It is in these caverns that Yonaga, a blob yokai, first latches onto Tobari's shadow to save himself. When Tobari finally leaves the cavern eighty years later, he lets the spirits he was holding on to depart to the afterlife properly. There Iwao, who unbeknownst to many created Botai Cavern, tells him that Sayuri has since gotten married and has aged considerably. As Yonaga stealthily leaves, Tobari departs for Shinonome.
At Shinonome, Tobari meets a priest, Reimei, who has begun developing barriers to prevent the rowdy yokai on the mountain from terrorising the villagers. After Tobari defeats the mountain yokai and their boss, Tsubura, while protecting Reimei, the priest accepts that he is the kind demon from Sayuri's past and takes Tobari to see her.
Inside the house, Sayuri is an old woman. Tobari tells her that he's there to keep his promise. He takes her outside where he casts the illusion that she is young once again. Sayuri scolds him for being so late that she became a grandma and they play together again. Sayuri understands that Tobari is still chasing his dream and says she'll keep cheering him on, waiting until the next time they can play again. As she dies in his arms, he promises to play with her again someday in the afterlife. Afterwards, Tobari tells his dream to Reimei and asks for him to help him achieve it. Reimei readily accepts.
The next day, Tobari challenges Tsubura to a duel for leadership. Tsubura agrees on the condition that Tobari defeat all of his underlings, since they are the measure of his strength. Tobari agrees on the condition that Reimei can assist him. He assumes with Reimei's barrier, it'll be an easy victory. But Reimei clarifies the one barrier that Tobari destroyed took him three months to make. Tobari still promises to win, as he's a great yokai. However, the rowdy yokai strategise to use Tobari's love for humans to get the upper hand. At the battle, Reimei gets caught off-guard by trying to rescue a child yokai, Tsumugi, and gets stabbed because of it, making him easily captured by Tsubura.
Tsubura then uses Reimei as a bargaining chip to make Tobari admit defeat, but this makes Tobari go berserk with rage, saying he will destroy everything Tsubura treasures, showing no mercy. He smacks Tsubura away with a large amount of force while saving Reimei. As they realise their loss, two of the underlings jump in to save Tsubura, saying it's their suggestion to have used the human to gain the upper hand. But Tobari shoves them out of his way, still enraged, saying he's going to teach Tsubura a lesson. But Reimei calls out to him, saying he needs to fight his anger and hatred, unless he plans to make a paradise filled with corpses. Tobari thanks Reimei for stopping him and announces himself as the victor, promising to turn this land into a paradise. He forbids all of the yokai on Shinonome from harming humans again.
The villagers hear of a new yokai leader, of which Tobari makes it his mission to confirm the rumours, trying to make friends with the villagers. Of course, this scares many of them, and he has to watch over them in secret. He tries to help a man who seems to be suffering, following him and confirming that it is a yokai draining him of his energy. He passes this information to Reimei, since he doesn't want to scare the humans any more than necessary. While he asks Reimei to do him this favour, another yokai, Shimon, writes a message to someone, saying to himself that Tobari is a calamity. He gives his message to a crow yokai that reports to Magatoki.
Reimei visits the ill man and his wife to exorcise the yokai in their house. He calls Tobari his friend, which makes the watching Tobari ecstatic. As Reimei tackles the fire, the fire begins to rebel, exploding around the house but nothing burns. Tobari yanks the ill man out of its line of attack before hiding back in the bushes. Reimei uses a sealing technique on the fire, and it turns out to be some sort of fire lizard yokai. Tobari asks to have it, as he likes them raw, and moves to eat it. Reimei, disturbed, yanks it back from Tobari, explaining that, as a vegetarian, he feels that anything he caught being eaten is the same as eating it himself. Tobari understands and lets the lizard be, who Reimei now names Hibachi. Tobari tells Hibachi to be good or he'll eat him. The crow yokai delivers the message to Magatoki, who asks another exorcist, Kuize, to take care of the matter. Meanwhile, Tobari meets one of Sayuri's grandchildren, Minori, who says she's always wanted to meet him and says that she wants to be friends with Tsumugi. Later on, Tobari introduces them to each other to encourage their friendship.
Kuize finds Tobari, stunned that the yokai is still able to even move. Tobari erects an entire forest to keep Kuize from going to the village. Kuize proceeds to go around the forest to the village and Reimei finds Tobari. Tobari asks Reimei to save Kuize from the mind control placed on him. Reimei offers to help Tobari first, but Tobari says he thinks that Reimei's help will only make it worse. With a promise that he's fine, Reimei accepts Tobari's request, and Tobari opens a way through the forest for him. Tobari promises to give Kuize a better dream after he returns to reality. When Reimei stops Kuize, Tobari's magic stops bleeding out of him and he rushes to see Kuize. There is an uproar in Shinonome asking for Kuize's execution. Tobari says Kuize's punishment should be to live and help create the paradise for humans and yokai to coexist. He then tells everyone that Kuize was being manipulated by a yokai and he vows to take responsibility for Kuize. Magatoki sends the crow yokai to strike Kuize, causing flowers to burst forth from his heart to kill him. Tobari tries to save him. Seeing Tobari try so hard for him, Kuize says he wishes to help build that future and then dies in Tobari's arms. Tobari resents whoever was pulling Kuize's strings. Reimei tells Tobari that he recognised the sword Kuize had, and that its last owner, Sayuri's son, slaughtered a lot of people, too. Sayuri's son was killed by other humans to stop him.
Later on, dealing with the forest wall he made, he utilises the Shinonome yokai to pulverise it to help him get rid of it. While they work on the forest, Yonaga seeks Tobari out for his power. When Tobari is made aware of him, he uses his magic to fight Yonaga. Yonaga then possesses Tobari's shadow and uses it to hide from attacks. With this, Tobari then sends Yonaga into an illusion where Yonaga sees the past, 500 years ago, where Magatoki is there to destroy all the demon leaders. Magatoki spares the cowardly Yonaga, and that is how he came to see Tobari when he was much younger, centuries after everyone else's murders. Tobari pulls him back to the present, ripping him out of his shadow. He then throws Yonaga against the trees, obliterating the trees completely behind Yonaga. Yonaga surrenders and calls Tobari his new lord.
Tobari asks why Yonaga attacked him, Yonaga says he wished for strength so that he would not have to be afraid. Tobari then smiles and says he will become Yonagas's new master to protect him and give him spirit power, in the exchange that Yonaga becomes his shadow and aid. Yonaga uses the opportunity to lecture Tobari nonstop about how to be a proper lord and use his powers more effectively, exhausting Tobari. However, Tobari loves hearing Yonaga talk. He just got tired after three days straight.
Later on, Tekka, one of the Shinonome yokai, discovers Shimon's betrayal and goes to report it to Tobari. Tobari asks what kind of person Shimon is and gives Tekka Kuize's sword, now purified of its mind control, and asks him to use the sword to protect others. When Tobari finds Shimon, he asks for the one controlling him, saying he can save Shimon. Though Shimon attacks, he inwardly pleads for Tobari to save him. Shimon then attempts to take his own life, since he cannot betray his current master. Tobari says he doesn't want him to take his life and withdraws. Any efforts to obtain Shimon fall short, and Shimon eventually takes Minori hostage when he finds her on the mountain. Tsumugi volunteers herself as a hostage as well as Minori is handed over to a tengu. Magatoki follows up with Shimon later and mind controls him to kill every human and demon in Shinonome, including his friends. Tobari finds Reimei and says that he suspects both of them were abducted with evidence.
The tengu delivers the children to the lord of Mt. Hari, Kazahane, claiming that Tobari sent them to spy. This causes an uproar and Kazahane sends out his own underlings to retrieve him. Tobari and Reimei go to Mt. Hari. While the two of them are gone, Shimon sets Shinonome Village on fire. Meanwhile, Magatoki has set up a barrier and started his attack on Mt. Hari and makes his way to Kazahane. Just as he kills another tengu, Tobari breaks through the barrier. Magatoki, knowing it must be Tobari, is thrilled. But, he decides to return to Shinonome to wait for Tobari there, leaving the task of killing Kazahane for later. Afterwards, some tengu show up to escort Tobari and Reimei to Kazahane.
Kazahane proves difficult to talk to, since he has no respect for those without wings. Shortly after, Tobari declares war and says he will claim Mt. Hari. Meanwhile, Minori helps Tsumugi escape with some clever antics to get the guards to fight. However, when they're cornered and Minori offers herself to let Tsumugi escape, Tsumugi cries out for Tobari to save them. Immediately, Tobari breaks through the nearest wall. Tobari knocks out the tengu and gives Yonaga permission to devour him. With some new orders for others protection, Tobari returns to Kazahane to carry out the duel. He tells Kazahane he will forgive him if he stops attacking humans, but Kazahane refuses. Kazahane compares Tobari's red eyes and skill to that of Magatoki and calls him bloodthirsty. Tobari's persuasions don't seem to work on Kazahane, even with the promise to protect the sky. With that, Tobari burns Kazahane's wings and Kazahane and Mt. Hari submit to Tobari's rule. Tobari seeks the red-eyed man Kazahane compared him to, and Yonaga says he recognises the description as the one in the memory. Shimon's goal to get them out of Shinonome is revealed. The yokai of Shinonome are working to help the villagers. But then Shimon is given the signal to exterminate everyone all at once.
Tobari and the others try to make their way back to Shinonome as quickly as they can, while Tekka tries to keep Shimon from killing the villagers. With Tekka, Meyui, and Tsubura at Shimon's mercy, Tsubura cries and goes on a rampage, in which Shimon loses. And then Magatoki does away with him, flowers sprouting from Shimon's heart. But this time, Tobari saves him in time, plucking the seed from Shimon's chest before it can sprout properly. Tobari uses a stone to shoot down the crow yokai flying nearby and asks Tsubura to collect it. Tobari traces the magic in the crow yokai to Magatoki's location.
Following the trace, Tobari finds a trail of freshly-sprouted flowers. He recognises it as a path he once saw in his childhood that he used to follow, and who they always lead back to. Afraid of the answer, Tobari follows the flowers hoping it isn't that person. He, unfortunately, finds that it was his once treasured friend, Magatoki. Magatoki says that he missed Tobari and begins attacking him, destroying his arm. The yokai of Shinonome feel the energy surge and begin to evacuate Shinonome Village while Yonaga rushes to Tobari's aid. Magatoki tells Tobari he's going to destroy the Shinonome, since it's the place Tobari wants to make his paradise. He says he doesn't like demons or humans, but he somehow supports the "dreaming part of Tobari, regardless of this world's circumstances" and is Magatoki's most important treasure. He doesn't want Tobari's dream to end, so he will keep breaking it so that it never comes true.
Tobari fights against Magatoki, but Magatoki easily overpowers Tobari. Yonaga tries to stop Magatoki, but gets stopped, and Magatoki turns his attention to the blob for a moment. Tobari screams at Yonaga to run. Tobari ends up having to save Yonaga, and gets a third limb, his leg, blown off. He says he promised to protect Yonaga and refuses to stand down. Yonaga begs him to reconsider his ideals, but Tobari says he needs him alive for those ideals. Tobari continues to fight, for the sake that the others get the chance to escape. Unfortunately, Magatoki subdues Tobari and creates a barrier that will encompass all of Shinonome and destroy everything inside of it.
When Tobari tries to use an illusion spell on Magatoki, Magatoki takes it and turns it on Tobari, making Tobari live the memory instead. He sees himself getting impaled, fire, death. Tobari succumbs to the trauma and ends up sharing Magatoki's madness in destruction. As Tobari tries to destroy Magatoki, Reimei interferes and pulls Tobari back. While Reimei holds off Magatoki using the spirit energy bleeding out of Tobari, the maddened Tobari bites Magatoki's barrier and destroys it, absorbing it into himself. Magatoki runs around Reimei and takes back the illusion from Tobari, trying to save him from that pain.
However, Tobari is still suffering, his consciousness and reason screaming at the nightmare illusion, while his instincts rampage. Reimei tries to calm Tobari down, only for Magatoki to try and stab him in the back. Tobari instinctively jumps in to protect Reimei. Reimei wonders if Tobari's looking for Sayuri again, and tells Tobari to follow him. When he shows him the village, he tells him that Sayuri is also gone. Tobari doesn't listen and runs to Sayuri's house, saying he wants to play. The house is empty and he begins sniffing to try and find her. And when he realises that she is, indeed, gone, he resumes his rampage. He finds Yonaga and attempts to eat him, but Yonaga tries to hold him back from the villagers that are hiding. Tobari still overpowers Yonaga.
Yonaga tries to talk some sense into Tobari, refusing to just let Tobari become consumed by his own power. Even as he breaks, he begs Tobari to hear him and to eat Yonaga's soul to help him become a divine ruler and to grow with Yonaga's feelings. Tobari pauses, but then is crushed by Magatoki's wooden golem. While the golem prepares to crush everything within range, Reimei manages to summon his barriers using Tobari's energy, destroying the golem. Reimei asks Yonaga to carry them out of there and to take them to Sayuri's grave. At the grave, he gets Tobari to remember what happened to Sayuri, and that all of his fears and pains are in the past. Reimei says he's here for Tobari and tells him to come back. With this, Tobari comes back to his senses.
Reimei takes Tobari's hand and helps him combine their energies to give Tobari enough energy to destroy the reformed wood golem with fire. Magatoki, impressed that a human managed to return Tobari to normal, says that he'll retreat for now, healing the injury he caused Tobari. As Magatoki helps Tobari up, Tobari asks for Magatoki to help him build his dream, to change his mind and atone for his sins. Magatoki says he hates anyone but Tobari and never wants his dream to come true and that he'll never listen to Tobari unless he can defeat him. Tobari says that he will defeat him and make him atone for his sins, that he won't give up on him because he is his precious friend. Magatoki calls him his friend, too, and then runs off, promising to make him bloom into a giant flower.
Tobari realises the destruction he caused to Shinonome and becomes sick to his stomach, dreading those he hurt or worse. Yonaga assures him that everyone is safe. He apologises and hugs Yonaga, saying he's so sorry he tried to eat him, and tells him to go back in his shadow to consume as much of his energy as he needs. Tobari's body fractures from his chest from the overconsumption of his energy, making cracks over his upper body. Tobari laments that he broke everything again. The village elder offers his estate for everyone to stay at while they make repairs. Tobari offers anything and everything he has, apologising for everything he's done. Tobari visits Sayuri's grave, apologising for not being able to control his powers even after all of his training. Kokonoe senses his energy and suspects that Magatoki must have kidnapped him from Botai Cavern. Tobari avoids Reimei in his shame.
Afterwards, Tobari makes a huge effort to get supplies for the villagers in Shinonome with the help of the yokai beneath him. He summons Oguchi Mimizu, a low-intelligence, massive, worm-like demon that eats anything to help clean up. However, with the villagers' terrified, he shrinks back and apologises for scaring them and turns to leave. Reimei fears Tobari's distance from him and seeks to lighten Tobari's load by trying to get him to talk. Tobari constantly flees. At Tekka's suggestion, Reimei has the village elder summon him for tea. The elder reveals that Tobari is so afraid to hurt others and of what they feel that he's running away from them, and that he'll push the ones he cares about and the ones trying to move forward away. He tells Tobari that the villagers don't blame him for the destruction, that they were saved because he was there. He tells Tobari not to lose, and Tobari cries, having needed to hear such words. He promises not to lose with a smile on his face. He talks out his worries with Reimei a little later.
Kokonoe's twin subordinates, Senri and Banri, find Iwao, asking where Tobari is. But as Iwao tells them, Magatoki impales him, saying he won't let them find him. Kokonoe orders the twins to go to Shinonome and kill Tobari, since he won't follow her wishes. Iwao agrees to serve under Magatoki, to support Tobari's dream. The twins arrive and Tobari has to fight to send them back to tell Kokonoe that he will talk with her. Because Tobari still has a crack in his chest, he refuses to fully unleash his power because the leak will cause the humans to pass out and he doesn't want to cause a panic and ends up using his illusions to subdue the twins. However, after he destroys their swords, his body begins to crumble apart from having used too much power. Fearing his energy will explode and destroy others, Reimei intervenes and channels Tobari's energy into the barrier and manages to save Tobari. The twins say they are defeated and will no longer take Tobari's life. He gifts the twins with medicine for their wounds and alcohol for his mother before they leave, pleased that their hearts are still warm and protective.
With his childhood mentor and terror, Mujina, being held over his head, Tobari decides he should head to talk with Kokonoe immediately, leaving Yonaga in charge of Shinonome while he's gone. Reimei comes along to train his barrier technique effectively. On the way to Akatsuki, Mujina attacks. In the battle, Tobari weakens until he collapses, causing his spirit energy to leak out. Tobari slips into madness and asks Reimei to play, but Mujina continues attacking. Despite Tobari and Reimei's efforts, Mujina ends up cornering Tobari and attempts to destroy his core to finish him off as they are surrounded by fire. Hibachi sees the fire and devours it and turns it on Mujina, and Reimei pulls Tobari to safety, hiding him in Reimei's shadow. Through the shadows, Tobari manages to launch effective attacks with his vines and successfully bite and incapacitate Mujina. Reimei casts a barrier to help Mujina recover and Tobari slowly returns to himself. They continue onward to Akatsuki. Reimei veers off to go learn the barrier arts and Tobari continues to Kokonoe.
Kokonoe tells Tobari to abandon all he has accomplished for his dream and to stay in her arms, in which only there can he be safe. Of course, he declines, and she says that one of them must die, then, as it is the successor's destiny to kill the parent. Tobari says he will not kill nor will he die, but he will defeat her. But first insists on healing the wound she got from her fight with Magatoki. However, while Tobari tries to create an antidote for Kokonoe, Magatoki approaches him again. When this is realised, Kokonoe rushes forth to protect Tobari. A maddened Tobari begs Magatoki to stop, and Magatoki concedes.
The fight between Kokonoe and a maddened Tobari begins. She pulls him into an embrace and begins to burn him to the point his body can't regenerate anymore. Tobari says he's scared and tells her to let go. As Tobari begins to fight back, Reimei arrives and tries to help Tobari. Tobari starts crying, asking if he's going to lock him in, asking if it's because he's bad. Kokonoe asks Reimei to free Tobari from his imprisoned life. Just as Kokonoe tries to soothe Tobari, he begins to completely shatter and his core becomes wrapped into a lotus flower. Reimei goes in to try and save him. There, Reimei meets three aspects of Tobari - the strength-obsessed demon part, the kind and considerate-yet-scared part, and the playful and easygoing part. Talking to each of them, he convinces them to go back in the cage of their own volition and heals Tobari's body. Tobari revives, completely healed, and promises to help everyone from the freshly revived Rikugou's curse that keeps trying to arrive. With Rikgou resealed, Tobari and Kokonoe resume their battle, now more happy than ever. After a long battle, Tobari proves his strength, and his mother submits to him as her new lord. With the completion of the battle, Magatoki congratulates him and tells Tobari that he is now among the Three Great Demons. The news spreads quickly, and those under Tobari's rule rejoice.
Magatoki departs before Tobari can even ask to talk, and Reimei goes to check on the villagers of Akatsuki. The humans are thrilled when they discover that it's Tobari, the "medicine demon" that will now watch over them. Tobari finds out that Iwao was tricked into serving Magatoki. Tobari's mother teaches him the importance of choice and protecting his subordinates from those that wish them harm. He promises Reimei that once Tobari gets a body that can withstand his power, hell challenge Magatoki properly.
(This is an ongoing series, and is therefore incomplete)
Personality: First and foremost, Tobari loves humans and has a huge soft spot for them. He makes no effort to hide how much he loves humans. If it ever comes down to believing a yokai or a human at first glance, he will almost always default to the human, not even having to understand why another yokai is being punished to side with said human. This may be partially due to the fact that the track record of how yokai treat humans isn't exactly great. Tobari's warmth towards humans is partially due to the fact that they live such short, and therefore beautiful, lives. He strives to ease their suffering, protect them, and only wishes for yokai to treat humans with respect and care. Tobari's dream is to create a paradise in which humans and yokai can live in harmony.
He also wishes to appease humans and doesn't like making them uncomfortable. A lot of humans are scared of yokai, and he understands this. So he may opt out of interacting more than a few seconds and will watch them from afar to take care of them. He isn't afraid to ask others for help if he knows that the humans will accept another more to help them out. He makes medicine for many and often sends Reimei in his stead if he feels he needs to keep his distance. Tobari would love nothing more than to be friends with all of them, though, meaning he puts the humans needs far before his wants.
Tobari is remarkably calm and collected and often handles matters with a remarkable level of grace. While not necessarily levelheaded in his decisions, he does try to be fair and believes in never killing others. This does not mean he's above causing damages (though perhaps not without being sure that the yokai can recover from them) to put his foot down and get what he wants. Tobari commands a lot of respect from other yokai, playing by the rules that the strongest will be the leader. He uses this to his advantage to demand the yokai under him don't terrorise the humans, and quick to punish those who do. And, despite his calm, cheerful demanour, Tobari can and will be quick to react with anger if humans are in harm's way, especially by another yokai. He was almost willing to kill for Reimei, until Reimei told him not build his paradise on top of corpses.
Tobari is very straightforward with his goals. If he sees away to accomplish them, he will pursue that path without hesitation. He isn't worried about having to fight all of Tsubura's subordinates in order to win Shinonome and doesn't hesitate to declare war against Kazahane to claim Mt. Hari. He even goes so far as to burn Kazahane's wings to get him to surrender. Even fighting his mother, he finds a way to win without having to follow the traditions of succession in his bloodline. He believes wholeheartedly in reaching his goal without having to kill others and will do whatever it takes to make it happen.
While Tobari is calm and straightforward, he also has a playful side and a childlike innocence. He teases Hibachi occasionally, saying he'll eat him but then says he's playing so long as Hibachi behaves, and enjoys getting to play around. (Apparently, however, pestering our protagonist to wake up is misbehaving and Hibachi does end up in his mouth on at least occasion; though Reimei is always in time to stop him). He also tends to regard fights as a form of play, even when his eyes go red from rage. As he doesn't tend to suffer from pain very often, it's little more than a wrestling match.
Tobari is a very dutiful leader and values the voices around him, especially if it's advice on how he can do better. This is so much so that he listens to one lecture him nonstop for three days, in which his response is to escape only temporarily. When confronted on it, he refuses to tell them to be quiet just to give him a break because he doesn't want them to stop speaking their mind. He is prompt to apologise for his wrongs. He shows his subordinates compassion and is very forgiving, despite that some of his subordinates dread otherwise. He is very idealistic in how he handles things, and one of his shortcomings is his hesitation to kill, even in regards to someone who was going to kill his subordinates, he hesitated. He resents his lack of will and the relief he felt in regards afterwards, even though it managed to resolve without anyone dying. On the other side of things, he is very grateful for anyone who serves and cares for him, even allowing himself to be taken care of by them, so long as he doesn't feel like he's committed some great wrong. He very much so trusts his subordinates.
Tobari fears the strength in his powers, knowing how destructive they are. It really shakes him on a core level when something gets destroyed because he couldn't control his strength, usually as a result of him being regressed by trauma. When he slips into this regression, it's almost like a madness in which he loses himself and behaves as a very simple child only wanting to eat and play. He responds with short sentences even down to one word and behaves on instinct. With his strength no longer kept in mental check, he destroys a lot without directly meaning to. It usually takes Reimei to pull him back from this. When Tobari recovers, he is very remorseful about all of the problems he caused, even if no one else blames him. Tobari is also afraid of thunder, probably in large part due to the way Mujina would scold him.
Overall, Tobari is a very optimistic and trusting individual bordering on naivete. His ideals get in the way and he pushes hard for others to help him create his dream for his paradise. And while he can prove his brute strength, he's hesitant to use it the way that is expected, choosing to save others rather than eliminate them as a problem. He promises to protect those underneath him and enforces it no matter what. Afterall, his subordinates trust him, and he wants humans to, too. His dream is worth fighting for, even if the world disagrees with him.
Key themes: Protecting others, especially humans.
Gaining strength to control and help others.
Forming loving bonds with others.
Main Motivation:To create a peaceful world where both humans and yokai can coexist.
Skills:Innate: These are abilities Tobari was born with, and are mostly a result of his lineage or because he was born abnormally strong.
- Stronger than your Wards - Yokai usually cannot enter or break a barrier. Tobari's magic is strong enough to break one with ease.
- Soul Storage - Tobari can hold an undetermined number of souls in his body with very little side effects (only passing out and some blood his first time). He does this so he can transport them to where they can safely depart for an afterlife. He can also absorb their techniques by doing this.
- Tails - These are mostly prehensile, grabbing humans away from danger with them, as well as displaying a large amount of strength in a "punch" with them. He can also use them to carry others while he moves about, including at a full run. He is also somehow able to use them to glide.
- Fire - Due to his heritage, Tobari is able to use fire, in blasts, pillars, balls, and lava. He is also able to use it to form shapes such as flowers or animals. They still look like fire and are not illusions.
- Agility - is very adept at dodging and moving in such a way to poise an effective attack. He can even catch a sword swung at him with ease. Dodging is usually his go-to with others, as he just wishes to talk things out most of the time. Though he certainly won't hesitate to go on the offensive if pushed, usually with human lives on the line. He can jump to tall heights, halfway up a grown tree in one jump, and climb in this manner on his feet. He is also fast that he can rush in and rush out almost like he's appearing and disappearing in nearby distances. This is different from LightSpeed Distance.
- Energy Share - Tobari can leak spirit energy when injured if it doesn't heal right away. The leak is so strong, it tends to make humans pass out, and can explode if he leaks far too much with his own abilities. With those he trusts, he can allow them to use his spirit energy to heighten their own magic.
Learned: These are abilities Tobari has learned, usually by consuming another's spirit energy. While he gained most in Botai Cavern, he can still learn more all the time.
- Shadow Hiding - Tobari can hide and emerge from shadows at will, probably a power gained from Yonaga. He can also use his attacks from these shadows.
- LightSpeed Distance - Using the electricity he devoured from Mujina, he can burst at fast speeds acrost long distances. Though he has difficulty controlling it and can end up in other places than he intended, even crashing into things and developing a current charge that can discharge electricity when he touches another.
- Electricity - Gained from biting Mujina, Tobari can use thunder and lightning. (Though he's apt to only use lightning)
- Rapid Healing - He can recover from all injuries, with few exceptions. The second Kuize's blade was broken, the life-threatening injury completely healed up within the hour. This rapid healing is also why he was able to withstand the curse's damages and still allowed him to be able to use his magic power for as long as he did. He can also regenerate all of his body parts within moments, including completely severed limbs. This is considered extremely high level for a yokai.
- Rage - Threatening humans, especially his friends, sends him into a rage where he will not hold back on his target. His abilities are the same, just more precise. His eyes turn red, though he seems to be unaware of the colour change. His abilities in his rage are compared to Magatoki's.
- Illusion - He can cast illusions that mess with his opponent's mind, immersing them in a highly detailed illusion that feels like they got transported to another world with their worst nightmares or a repeat of the past. Think you can hide in shadows to get the upper hand against Tobari? Nope. He'll just pull you right back out of them by finding your core as he immerses you in an illusion.
Unspecified Aquirement: These are the abilities that we are unsure of at the current time whether he inherited them or learned them.
- Vines - Tobari can summon vines in mass amounts, often using them to incapacitate his enemies.
- Take root - Tobari starts this attack by jumping on a spot, roots will stem from where his toes land, and the roots then begin to thrash about.
- Growth - He can help plants grow faster. Is particularly fond of doing this with medicinal herbs to help others with.
- Blast - By placing his palm on a target, he can release a devastating blast that otherwise explodes or shatters his opponent.
- Accute senses - can tell if someone is ill or possessed by a yokai. He can also tell what a person has been doing versus what they're trying to portray. Such as knowing Reimei is actually doing pushups instead of resting. Can differentiate between species, even if they're disguising themselves (yokai as human or vice versa). He can also sense magic, be it in objects or people, and where that magic is located. Tobari's ears are also so powerful, they can actually hear emotions distinctively and call them by name, even if others are good at covering it up. Tobari doesn't try to let it be known, because he knows it can be unsettling to others. However, it's just the feelings themselves, not the specifics like what they desire or what is making them afraid.
- Doesn't Need Sleep - Tobari can go an extended period of time without needing sleep. The last time he slept for five days, he said he hadn't slept for a decade prior.
Item: Just in case it doesn't go without saying, the cage around his core, please.
Sample: Toplevel TDMTDM with LloydTDM with AmeryNotes: Oh, boy, lookit all those OP abilities. Nerf at will. Because he will not hesitate to use them as he deems necessary.
